The Halbach Hammer was a present from Gustav Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach to the city of Essen. Originally erected in Weidenau an der Sieg, the monument is now located in the western part of the forest park 'Waldpark' founded by Margarethe Krupp in conjunction with the Margarethenhöhe district, and which she presented to the city of Essen as a recreational 'promenade'. The Halbach Hammer, first mentioned in a charter in the Siegerland in 1417, was dismantled in 1900 after almost 500 years in operation.
It was taken apart for transport to an industrial exhibition, which in the end never took place. Gustav Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach acquired the monument in 1914. He had the Hammer brought to Essen and rebuilt to full functionality in 1935/6 in the Nachtigallental area, overlooking Margarethenhöhe. Technically, the Halbach Hammer is a smelter hammer. It combined a smelting and smithing process. Today, the heavy hammer is often featured in industrial history exhibitions of the Ruhr Museum. The Halbach Hammer wing of the museum is closed in winter.
