Baldeneysee (Lake Baldeney)

Lake Baldeney, created in 1931 by damming the Ruhr to form a reservoir and waste water facility, has become a recreational facility for the entire region. Rowing clubs, sailing and windsurfing schools provide leisure activities on the 2.7km lake. Once a year, the elite of the German sailing world meets here during Essen Week, the largest German inland regatta.

For sporty lake visitors, going round the 14.7km of lake front on inline skates, on foot or by bike, are favourite leisure activities. Anyone who likes things to be less strenuous, can get to know the forested lake and river banks in the boats of the 'White Fleet' (Weiße Flotte).

An eyecatcher on high: The Villa Hügel, the residence of the Krupp industrial family until the 1940s, and backdrop for top class art history exhibitions today.
