Theater Extra

20 years of the Theater Extra in Essen-Borbeck. 20 years of theatre work full of idealism and motivation. Founded in Essen in 1989, the Theater Extra has played at the Borbeck Wasserschloss without interruption. The currently 20 strong ensemble is made up of professional and amateur actors. During the theatre season, which lasts from September to May at Theater Extra, the theatre runs through a set programme, usually performed every Saturday at 7 pm.

A lot has happened at Theater Extra since 1989 – a permanent ensemble that has gotten decidedly younger over the past few years, new plays, new ideas, and fresh surroundings - due to recent renovations carried out at the start of this year. But one thing has remained the same: The motivation to entertain audiences again and again.

The Theater Extra programme is broadly varied - whodunits, comedies, and drama productions form the basic repertoire of the establishment. Guest performances from various artists shake things up a bit from time to time, and the end result is a truly colourful theatre programme for all age groups.

After many years of Theater Extra in the 'Residenzsaal' of the castle, the theatre finally moved to its own new premises in 2000 at the 'Wirtschaftsgebäude', opposite the castle proper. A small, semi-circular stage, an auditorium for a maximum of 60 people, superb technical equipment, props, wardrobe, and a central control room offer a great deal of space for creativity. The lovingly created sets, and the familar ambiance lend this theatre its very special charm, valued by local audiences just as much as by those who have traveled far for the experience.
