Essen's Grillo Theater is one of the oldest theatres in the Ruhr region. It was named after its benefactor, the industrial magnate Friedrich Grillo. The play house, which was designed by the famous Berlin theatre architect Heinrich Seeling in neo-classical style, was opened on 16 September 1892 with Lessing's "Minna von Barnhelm". Following its destruction during the Second World War, it was reopened - with a brand new facade - with a performance of "Meistersinger von Nürnberg".
Anselm Weber has been director of the Grillo Theatre since the 2005 / 2006 season. Modern classic performances by playwrights like Shakespeare, Schiller, and Ibsen, as well as contemporary plays are the focus of the programme. These plays are produced on the large stage at the Grillo Theater, and on the studio stages 'Casa' and 'Box'.
Under the the direction of Anselm Weber and his team, the play house has become and important cultural focal point not only for Essen, but for the whole region. In addition to the ambitious programme - and directors, who have started telling stories on stage once again - the theatre also promotes annual city exploration projects: an artistic study of the region and its people, which has put stage and drama back on the map for the media and audiences.
