Theater Thesth

Thesth Theatre

Theater Thesth emerged in 1982 as an initiative by parents and employees of a kindergarten in Essen-Stadtwald, and has developed into an important component of Essen's theatre landscape.

Its dedicated performers have been putting on children's theatre, comedies, whodunits, and serious drama for more than 25 years now.

The ensemble takes pride in its 'amateur' status, that is: a group that even though it 'only' comes together part-time, still works hard and with a jealous eye for detail to produce their plays professionally.

One of the high points in Theater Thesth history was a visit by the Russian playwright Lev Ustinov in 1995 on the occasion of the premiere of his play "Fräulein Rührmichnichtan" as part of the "Days of Russian Culture" sponsored by the city of Essen.

With "Butterfly Blues", Theater Thesth experimented with politically motivated theatre in 2006.

In 2007, Franzobel's "Kafka" followed. Both plays were directed by Wolfgang Gruber. In 2008. Theater Thesth offered entertainment for children with 'Mowgli's Jungle Adventures' in an own interpretation of Rudyard Kipling's 'The Jungle Book'.

In January 2009, the ensemble moved to 'Freizeitbad Oase'. Under Wolfgang Gruber's direction, they staged Nestroy's 'Häuptling Abendwind', a burlesque type play set on a South Sea island.
