The Museum Folkwang was founded by Karl Ernst Osthaus in Hagen in 1902, and was the first museum for contemporary art in Europe. After relocating his most important works from Hagen to Essen in 1922, Osthaus had the opportunity to add some premium pieces to his collection. Today, the museum is among the best known museums of the classical modern era. The museum's reputation is based on its outstanding collection of 19th century German and French paintings, and classical modern paintings. The works of art from the graphics collection as well as the photography collection, founded in 1978, are among the most respected of their kind in Europe. The Deutsches Plakat Museum, which with its 350,000 posters has one of the largest collections in Europe, is a subsidary of the Museum Folkwang. Alongside the large public exhibitions which are famous internationally, the museum's exhibits focus mostly on contemporary art.
In 2010, the Museum Folkwang will add a new wing, designed by the English architect David Chipperfield, and financed by the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach Foundation under the chairmanship of Prof. Dr. h.c. mult. Berthold Beitz. The new building is being constructed by Neubau Museum Folkwang Essen GmbH, a company of the Wolff Group.
