To make it clear: Of course Essen is the Capital of Culture in 2010. But not alone. Duisburg, Oberhausen, Dortmund, Bochum, Sprockhövel, Bottrop and the other 46 towns and communities that belong to the Regionalverband Ruhr (Regional Association Ruhr) are also the Capital of Culture. The whole Ruhr region is RUHR.2010.
In order to organise all 53 Ruhr region towns and cities, once the competition entry was submitted, RUHR.2010
GmbH was founded. It is the umbrella organisation for the Capital of Culture. It plans and organises all regional projects, manages the budget, and advertises the Capital of Culture both nationally and internationally.
In effect, the entire Ruhr region has earned the title Capital of Culture. In accordance with the rules set down by the
EU, only cities may compete for the title Capital of Culture. We therefore selected Essen to be the region's representative in the European competition.
Essen has therefore taken on a very special role among the region's 53 towns and cities. Essen has
e.g. the only town or city council that is a co-shareholder of the RUHR.2010
GmbH.
